Nope, in most states you can’t be a police officer at all with a felony conviction.

Most will argue because in many areas you can’t possess a gun with a felony conviction. And while that is true, the larger issue is a few things:

1. Plenty of people are applying for police jobs who don’t have felony convictions, so there is no point in even looking at you.
2. You will be worthless in court, any time you testify in a major case, the defense will simply bring up your felony conviction and destroy your creditability
3. Finally, it’s a felony conviction. In the past you showed such disregard for the law that you were caught and charged with a felony…Not exactly the type of person you want to give a gun to and tell them to have fun patrolling.

There is a rumor, that I personally believe is false, that is saying Pennsylvania State Police are setting extreme quotas for about 30 days. It is said that each officer will be required to pull someone over every 10 minutes while on duty.

This sounds very extreme to me. I browsed the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, but found it a bit overwhelming to look through.

I know any such quotas are illgal in California and other states, can anyone tell me if it is also illegal in Pennsylvania? Thanks.

There is a 1981 Pennsylvania law banning the practice of "directly or indirectly" suggesting that an individual police officer should issue "a certain number of traffic citations."

However, there has been an ongoing investigation in Pennsylvania for the past few years about the Pennsylvania State Police issuing quotas for their troopers to meet. The only reason they are getting away with it is that they are calling them "averages" and "standards" to hide the fact that it is a quota.

Riot police fired at least three shots of individual applications of tear gas and powder at protestors outside the temporary G20 jail on Eastern Ave. around noon on Sunday, where minutes earlier a peaceful demonstration by the Toronto Community Mobilization Network was broken up when plain-clothes police stormed the crowd to snatch at least two people in targeted arrests. After the arrests occurred, police ordered the crowd to move north, first surging forward with batons and then firing these “muzzle blasts.” One man and one woman appeared to be injured after the blasts. Can Greece Police pull people over and write tickets on the New York State Parkway?

Greece is a town in NY. But I thought only State Police could pull people over on a State Parkway.

Jurisdiction is determined by geographic boundaries, not the type of roadway. As long as the road runs through their jurisdiction, they can enforce traffic law there. They type of roadway only identifies who is responsible for maintenance, not who can patrol.

can i become a state police officer even though I wear glasses?

im 16 now but when i grow up i want to be a state police officer in maryland. ill go to college and study police science or criminal justice. but the problem is that i wear glasses. i heard that you have to have 20/20 vision uncorrected to be a state police officer, is that true? im going to get lasik later in my life tho. how old do you have to be to get lasik anyway?

I don’t know why you would need 20/20 uncorrected vision to be a cop. I would think you would need vision that IS correctable to 20/20 or better. Other wise they wouldn’t have very many people on the force as they get older. I think a lot of officers prefer to wear contact lenses so they can wear sunglasses.

State Police Powers on the Environment and the Supreme Court?

While I understand that the federal government has Commerce Clause powers and through administrations, can carry Congress’ will when dealing with the environment (Chevron, EPA v. Mass), I was wondering how states deal with this. They have police powers in this area, but are there Supreme Court cases where petitioners argue against the state’s power to regulate the environment?
I understand that the case dealt with CO2. However, it does enforce that the federal government has the power to regulate state environment.
How federalism and the environment? Like state statues against federal statutes? I’m assuming the federal government supersedes.

The "Reserved and Delegated Powers" clauses allow the states to have regulatory authority on those things not reserved for the federal government. Thus, states can regulate individually those things which the federal government does not regulate, and can additionally refine the federal regulations if they are not specific. Further, state police agencies have full powers to enforce all federal laws, including environmental laws, and then turn cases over to the federal government for prosecution.
