In what ways are a city police and a state police similar and different?
A city police and a state police has a goal to serve the citizens of a state. In what ways are a city police and state police similar and in what ways are a city police and state police different?
Mostly it has to do with how they are funded and what their primary responsibilities are. City police are funded locally at the city level primarily and their job is to be on call and maintain order and enforce laws within a specific city area. Sheriff’s generally are county police officer’s funded at that level who mostly patrol outside of city’s, ie. on highways, in rural areas, and in towns without their own law enforcement. State Police–like the state highway patrols, are funded at the state level and are dispatched to take care of statewide tasks, and things like highway patrolling and law enforcement at special events and government functions. The groups often work in contact with each other depending on the nature of what’s needed, but it’s mostly just an issue of funding and general jurisdiction.

They Both Have weapons! The state Police are ready to kill you if you disobey them, but city police won’t ! And of course the obvious City Police are under mandate of the City and Mayor, The State Police Under the Governor!

Both have full arrest powers and their members are sworn law enforcement officers. As far as differences, tradtionally a municipal police department has jurisdiction only in that city. State police has statewide jurisdiction. Besides enforcing state statutes, a PD also enforces that city’s ordinances. State Troopers are usually known to be a little more black and white, while city cops realize that gray exists sometimes. No offense to any troopers out there.

Not a lot of difference. They have different academys, city police generally work a city (but have arrest powers in the entire state) and state police are given areas to work within the state.

It depends upon the state. In some states State Police are only a "highway patrol." In other states, like mine, State Police are a "full service" police agency. That means that the State Police respond to calls just like "local" police. I am a State Trooper. My barracks covers about 1/2 of the county in which I work. The other municipalities are covered by local police. Our jobs are the same except that I have to cover 3-5 municipalites per shift while a local typically covers only 1 (but probably a more heavily populated one). So I may drive 100-200 miles in a shift while a city cop might put 3 miles on his car. Other than that, no difference.
