The Bayeux Tapestry – Controversy Rages on
The practice of reproducing tapestry art for use in the home is becoming more popular by the year. The versatility of tapestry lends itself easily to use for a more substantial version of masterpieces. Among the many reproductions of famous artwork sometimes seen in living rooms are scenes from a work known as the Bayeux Tapestry.
The Bayeux Tapestry has been the source of much controversy over the centuries since the Norman Conquest. Strictly speaking, it’s not a tapestry at all, but a series of embroidered panels stretching some 230 feet in length. It has long been held up as one of the most authentic historic accountings of William the Conqueror’s invasion of Britain.
There is enough muddle over its commission, origin and authenticity to spur vigorous debate at many a dinner party or soiree. Portions of the ‘tapestry’ are well known enough to be easily recognizable, and the events that took place are clearly depicted. How accurate the portrayal is has oft been brought into question, however.
The Tapestry’s Origin
The commission of the tapestry has alternately been assigned to various parties. Some attribute it to William’s devoted wife Mathilde, who was said to have stitched it with her ladies in waiting. They point to one Aethelflaed, widow of Byrhtnoth, Earl of Essex who died in the Battle of Malden in 991. Aethelflaed commissioned a tapestry of her husband’s last stand in honor of Byrhtnoth, and presented it to the Ely Cathedral.
A more plausible explanation perhaps is that William’s half-brother, the Bishop Odo of Bayeux, directed that the tapestry be embroidered in England by Saxon nuns. Others maintain the work was done in Winchester itself. Certainly the tapestry is of the right length to surround the nave of the Bayeux Cathedral, and the stitching is comparable to premier English needle workers of the time.
The tapestry itself has several prominent scenes which have been reproduced for home interior use. Harold’s preparations for the invasion is one, the launching of William’s fleet to set sail for Britain and his subsequent landing comprise two more. The Battle of Hastings which concludes the existing tapestry is particularly favored as a reproduction.
Historical Accuracy In Doubt
Still more debate rages over the actual historical value of the tapestry, seeing as how it was commissioned by the victors and understandably can be expected to be slanted hard in their favor. There is no solid description of the Norman conquest from the invaded countrymen’s point of view, and nearly all of the information we have of the event is gleaned from the tapestry itself.
The Normans maintain that William had received an oath of support from Harold, brother-in-law of Edward the Confessor, after William had rescued Harold from shipwreck. When Harold ascended to the throne of England upon Edward’s death, William invaded citing Harold’s breach of faith as the reason.
Historians differ in their acceptance of this version of events. The only collaboration of Harold’s oath ever occurring is in a Norman account dating a full ten years after the invasion. This naturally falls under the same suspicion as it is likely the Normans would paint themselves in the best possible light despite the real facts of the matter.
Be that as it may, the panels showing Harold swearing allegiance and later being killed are among some of the most well known panels. The controversy lingers – The panel showing the Prince’s death holds some ambiguity as to how he actually died. Tradition holds that it was an arrow through the eye that took him out, but the embroidered words on the tapestry are ambiguous both in context and placement.
Tapestry Still Worth Consideration
Some things in the tapestry ring undeniably true; the appearance of Halley’s comet is chronologically correct, and the castles of the time are depicted inside and out with what seems to be reasonable accuracy based on excavations of similar sites. It is likely that there is as much truth as propaganda in the tapestry as a whole, much like many other historic documents written from one side’s point of view.
When looking at the panels available as reproductions, you should decide which portion of the story you wish to concentrate on. Most of the research concerning the Norman conquest is based on the tapestry itself, so don’t expect to find much more than general suppositions. One thing you can count on is for the controversy to continue. Whatever the panel or panels you choose for your home, you can rest assured your selected portion of the Bayeux Tapestry will quickly become a conversation piece and a valuable, interesting addition to your home.

Hey guys … Finally got some bars on my mobile so I can post a quick thank you to all of you and to Regina. My friends have no Internet service on their mountain home/cabin and wireless service is iffy. They were thrilled to know a few phone pics I snapped while we were having lunch made it to palingates (they are now up to speed on PG and love it as they can’t stand $P … and own the restaurant). So, if Regina wishes she can include them (garden photos) on here again without any fear ( legal or otherwise). Miss you guys … Kisses to all.

I think you're probably right that controversy could create more lurkers. Personally I don't think that I'm particularly interested in controversy, although I guess controversy does motivate me to mediate conflict (not really a lurking phenomena). It'd be interesting to see if there's any literature on this.
I like your suggested question for the learner at the storming stage. I think it could replace “What do I need to do, and is it relevant?”.
Re: specific learning goals. Yeah I agree with you, but I'd already spent too much time on this, and couldn't be bothered going on to consider this. It's much simpler and easier looking at the overall process of socialisation and learning development.
Thanks for the link. It looks really useful at first glance.

I guess he’s referring to the controversy over liberals that would seek to remove toys from fast food meals, limit unhealthy foods, etc. None of their laws have ever been passed that I know of, though, so I have no idea.

i will certainly try the peach almond ice cream. My husband just told me of a peach tree (on unoccupied property) that I can go collect peaches from… just a few more weeks (and maybe some sun)!

[...] A thread on the Eggcorn Forum talks about a puzzling phrase some of the participants have seen: the war wages on. One poster speculates that the war-related verb wage is an eggcorn for rage; others think it’s an idiom blend of wage war and the war rages. Either of those is a possible explanation, but neither of them is the first one that occurred to me. The war rages on reminded me of a time about five years ago, when — oh, wait a minute… [harp music, wavy screen] [...]

Karen's point about the portability of a podcast is interesting. It puts me in mind of exhibition aural guides, which are linked via (radio signal, WiFi, RFID?) to hot spots at different points in the exhibition). There is an example in action at the Bayeux Tapestry
Both Karen and Susan mention Camtasia. That was purchased here in Barbara Bolton's time, but we are now reviewing whether we stick with that or whether to go forward using Moodle. It will be interesting to see where the momentum builds up around these products.

if you keep saying there is no controversy it will not make it true. If any scientist disputes the evidence then there is a controversy. If there was no controversy why is there so many web sites, books, TV shows and of course blogs dedicated to the discussion of evolution and creation?
If you feel the controversy is dead, why are you here arguing against the controversy?

Boy can I relate to your list! My son rages and now that he’s getting bigger (almost as tall as me at 9 yrs.) he’s getting more dangerous during his rages. I agree that we need to do everything possible to bring our kids back down before they rage if it is possible. I know that outsiders may see it as giving in to our kids, but we all know that the price we pay during a rage is too high and must be avoided at all costs!
I like Yash Chopra as a director because his movies evoke a certain old world charm…Liked Veer Zaara as well…The songs were gems….This movie looks exciting on paper with SRK-YC-ARR-Gulazaar-Anushka and Katrina on board….This alongwith Aamir’s Dhoom-3 has to be two of biggest movies in 2012…
Hello, this is my first time at reading a post AM, and it appears your earthly representative seems a little stressed, if not wound up – I have no idea whats prompted this but? I would suggest a break away and stop the merry go round for a while and go and visit Yorkshire. I suggest Yorkshire because I could almost guarantee anominity and definitely no celebrities to note. (though men there are a little too Yorkshire which isn,t necessarily good) – It could almost be a sabbatical for him. In the meantime do you think you could very kindly ask him if his tapestry is touring as I would like to do my dissertation on it (so its quite important) and compare it with the Bayeux one which isn’t quite as much fun? Thank-you
“These men wonder at the star” is the literal translation. Is there a story behind you using it? I realize it’s from the Bayeux tapestry.
