I was just thinking about how dumb Americans were.
Ever since America went to a volunteer armed forces system, jobs have been leaving the country in droves. Now, for all the ranting against welfare and paying people a decent wage, funny enough, the military offers free health care, free or subsidized housing, free and discounted meals and groceries and basically cash money to spend at your leisure. This is for the military, a huge entity that largely contributes nothing for the American economy, but rather takes.
If those jobs were still in America, the volunteer system wouldn’t work. Because the jobs mysteriously have been outsourced, basically, many men and women are forced to join to have a decent life. How is this different from welfare? It’s actually worse! I hate to break it to you youngsters on here, but our military is not a self-defense force! Don’t pull that argument!
Also, look at the problem with Japan. The birth rate there has plummeted so badly, they are having to consider importing foreign labor. They are not as open to foreigners like the West.
Now look at America, Britain and Australia, like that. We actually reward single mothers for having kids. Don’t you think that is deliberate? Now, not only do you have all the good jobs being outsourced, the government encourages poor women to have kids to survive. What are these children going to do when they grow up?
Join the Army. That’s underhanded Social Engineering at work.
No… because there is nothing underhanded about it. Been going on for decades. The best way to have control over someone is to make them dependent on you. Eventually absolute dependence gives absolute control.

Obviously, you have never been in the military. yes, they get allowances but their base pay is practically at poverty level.
So a soldier spending his pay check doesn’t contribute anything to the economy? You need a lesson in econ 101.
Some soldiers do join the military because it might be their only option. But a lot more join because they WANT to serve their country. That”s a concept that might be foreign to you.
Jobs are leaving this country because the labor unions have destroyed them and they can get better tax deals in other countries.

Don’t forget, it is the military that has given you the right to ask your question without being beheaded. Sure, military doesn’t contribute to the economy but without it, there would be no economy. It’s like auto insurance, you pay and pay and usually recieve nothing, but when you need it…you really need it.

As an Army Alumnus, I disagree because the military is a legitimate government expense. The politicians utilizes the military the wrong way.

You’re connecting dots that don’t necessarily go together. For instance, your first line: "Ever since America went to a volunteer armed forces system, jobs have been leaving the country in droves." Those two things may be concurrent, but how are they cause-and-effect?
True, the military offers a lot of incentives these days, but being shot at in Afghanistan or blown up in Iraq is a definite disincentive> The Army has to advertise a lot and offer a lot of perks to get new recruits.
And your assertion that the military ". . . contributes nothing for the American economy, but rather takes," is definitely wrong. The military is a HUGE factor in the economy through defense contracts and production of planes, tanks, ships, arms, ordinance, etc. It’s also an important means of distributing money to certain communities.
I applaud you original thinking, but you need to dig a little deeper to make you case.

Don’t even get me started on the Social Engineering of the Great Depression. FDR burning American crops and slaughtering American pork to artificially raise the world price.
But the Army no. the Military is one of the few honorable ways to over come your modest beginnings.
