Stalking the Highland hills, Sir John Nutting QC surveys his estate. Everything he sees belongs to him. Yet this may all be about to change. If the newly formed Scottish parliament have their way, Sir John and others will be selling their land to local people, whether they like it or not! Labour MP Alan Wilson sees the bill as an attempt to “right historical wrongs” – to open up land tenure to rural communities in order to bring about economic development and repopulation. The landlords look on the bill less favourably. They compare the bill to the “Mugabe land grab” and communist revolution, arguing that such “social engineering” would be disastrous for Scotland. For Alan Wilson such arguments are unconvincing. He asserts: “Call it social engineering… I would call it liberating for future generations the land in which people live and work”.

Well here the government is doing all it can to tax and regulate the forest industry out of business, even the Obamacare bill taxes papermills. Paper mills sell their forest holdings to the state, hurting the tax base and destroying fulltime jobs. Now they figured out deer thrive on logged tracts, so the hunting arguement is void. Thinned evergreen forest help cool the planet, thinned rain forests, the alternate source of paper, increases temperature. But we are going communist here now.

It is an abbreviated Latin term introduced to English usage thru “ye ‘olde’ legal profession.”
The literal Latin words are: “et cetera, et cetera,” meaning a list of relative & similar illerations to the original, as you have quite accurately stated.

Sorry, but why would independence mean that English people couldn’t live in Scotland or vice versa? What’s any of that got to do with independence? Right now, you can go and live in any EU country without any problem, so why would it be different between an autonomous Scotland and England?

Property ownership is the cornerstone of freedom, but then that is why my ancestors left there and came to the USA, with the hope that someone wouldn’t be coming through and taking their home and land away. You can’t right wrongs of the past, even legal in their day, by robbing from living landowners today. This is just popularism redistribution of wealth. What if worldwide the governments redistributed all land based on politics rather than legal title? Non-landowners would like it.

If Scotland ever became independent, my bro-in-law is English and married to my sister who’s Scottish. There’s millions of Scots married to English and vice versa. How would that work? My niece is Scottish and her fiance is English. It;s just how it’s always been for generations. English live in Scotland. Scottish live in England. So, what’s the big deal and who’s causing this fracas? Eh?

Some of my family were Scots Nats , in earlier days Presbyterian Wee Kirkers and Jacobites , and were cleared in Sutherland and Easter-Ross . Now I hear that Alec Salmond is selling out the sand dunes of Aberdeen to another bloody White Settler , the loud mouthed belligerent Donald Trump , Jesus Christ Alec , why don’t you resign. That action simply nauseates me , our heritage , against the wishes of the local government , sold , Scotland again stabbed in the back by it’s leadership.

The notion that a sorry lot of absentee landlords , White Settlers and others , have more love for the glens, lochs, and mountains of Scotland than the descendants of the highlanders who were dispossessed of their properties in the clearances is appalling and without any basis in fact.

All efforts to repopulate low density land made by governments are bound to fail. The landlords of the Highlands are the owners of the land, and if they sell it new landowners will arrive. It is absolutely true that profit is minimum if there is, and is also true that the UK is a democratic country where anyone can buy or sell property. Politicians should no proceed with this bill because it will eventually empty the Highlands of the people that really care for it, its landowners.

A really good video about the land issue in Scotland. The clearances, both of the Lowlands and then of the Highlands were a dreadful stain on Scotland’s past.
Clan Chiefs evicting their own people, their own blood kin for the sake of money to play the dandy in London and Paris.
The tartan, once the clothing of the Gael in the Highlands became its shroud. The sheep filled the straths and the glens, whilst the people filled the ‘hell-ships’ on their way to Cholera Bay in Canada.
