When did social engineering become part of politics through the tax code?
-Tax breaks for married people especially with children
-Alcohol and tobacco use discouraged with taxes
-donating to non profits becoming tax deductible
-encouraging property ownership through tax credits
so basically when did government go from guarding liberty to shaping society into it’s desired direction?
Since the free market fails to take into account negative externalities, that is basic macroeconomics 101. It’s been done for quite awhile mostly with positive results, of course when political agendas get in the way it can be dangerous, but it can also be very beneficial.

How can you have a tax system that DOESN’T include an element of social engineering?
If we decide to tax income, we’re discouraging the earning of income. If we taxed sales, we would be discouraging sales. If we taxed assets, it would encourage people to dispose of their assets. And so it goes….
